Sleepover parties are, by and large, rare in Singapore. Perhaps it is due to the Asia culture, but sleepovers parties or slumber parties are very seldom seen. First and foremost for sleepover parties – plan out a full plan of the party so you know when the kids should be doing what. The age group of the kids invited for the sleepover party should not be too young such that they might be crying for their parents in the night. That would certainly be undesirable to the party.

Invitations

Since this is a sleepover party, you need to be extremely clear in your invitation cards. Besides stating the time the party starts and ends, you need to give address, whom to contact in cases of emergencies and in this case also, RSVP and ensure contacts of the children who are going to sleepover are noted down accordingly. This is in case of emergencies so you know whom to call and contact (on both sides). It would be easier if you include in your invitation a detachable portion with all of these information requested so that the parents can fill them up before hand and pass to you when the kids are dropped off at the location of the party. This not only makes it easier for the parents, it also makes it easier for you to keep track of the contacts and keep them together in a safe place.

In your invitation, you should also state clearly what the kids need to bring for the party. Should there be a need for sleeping bag, state clearly in the invitation card. Also, state toiletries and such as a reminder so that they remember to pack and bring their own items.

Party Programmes

While this is a sleepover party (or slumber party) you can still have a theme to the sleepover. You could have the regular fairytale, pirates, soccer, magic.. basically whatever theme that you would like. See some of my previous blog entries with respect to some ideas on those themed parties. :) The programmes of the party should more or less follow those themed parties with something more after that. What you will need is some after dinner entertainment.

After dinner of course, some amount of time should be allotted to cleaning and washing up. Once that is done, you can actually have a relaxed programme of movies. A movie marathon is one of the easiest way to keep the children entertained after dinner. Of course, you can have other things besides that. One suggestion for an all girls party would be to have some make-up/ make-over fun. For the night, provide a cosmetic set where the girls can have fun trying out various make-up. Alternatively, for boys and girls alike, simply turn on the Playstation (if you have one!) and let everyone have fun taking turns playing the games! This is a guarantee entertainment that most will like!

For a mixed party group, you can also provide board games that includes large number of people, or even games like Twister and such where the kids can take turns to have a lot of fun. If the kids are old enough or mature enough, a ghost story telling session is guaranteed to be a huge load of fun! However, do note that some kids will get scared after that, so you would have to gauge if this entertainment form is appropriate!

Lights out!!

Designate a timing for the all-important slumber (that’s why its called a slumber party, isn’t it?) when the lights go out. Do set some simple safety rules so that if the kids still play after lights out, there will not be accidents (as far as possible) happening. Also, ensure that everyone knows the way to the toilet and to the main door as will as the safest and fastest way out of the house in case of emergencies. If possible, leave the toilets light on so it does provide some dim lighting in the night so not everything is dark.

Enjoy the night of the slumber party and have fun with the kids!

Kinetic Gal’s Timeline Guide to Organising a Birthday Party! July 21, 2008

Many a times, Mighty Magic Factory receives calls from parents just days away from the party, asking if we would be available to host the parties. Often, we would be unable to do so, simply due to the tight time line and also, because, most times, our entertainers would have been fully booked by then.

This disappointment however, could have been fully avoided simply by planning your party in advance. :) Not only does this save you from the last minute flurry of calls in desperation, but it also makes the planning a lot easier and fun to do. So what exactly should the timing be like to organize your party? Let yours truly, Kinetic Gal, give you an idea with a brief timeline! :)

The Party Organization Timeline!

2 months before: Start searching for a suitable party entertainer/ party host

1.5 months before: Settle on party entertainer/ party host + decorations + preliminary date for party

1 month before: Confirm party date and look for food caterer (if you’re having food catering)

3 weeks before:  Send out party invites

2 weeks before: RSVP invitations and confirm caterer (and party bags if it is not included in entertainment package)

1 week before: Look for birthday cake and order in advance

2 days before: RSVP invitations again and prepare snacks etc

PARTY TIME!! Enjoy yourselves!

1 day after: Relax and give yourself a huge pat on the back for a party briilliantly planned

[Optional :P ] 1 week after: Start thinking of a new theme for your next party!!

That really, is a recommended timeline in brief. Of course, you could also, simply just give a call to a professional party entertainment company (like us!) to settle the food, decorations and party bags for you, leaving you the easy and simple organization for party invites and cake!

Whatever it is, remember to plan in advance so you will have ample time to look around for the best and not be too tired out by the whole process… Afterall, the point to having a party is to relax and have fun! :D

Kinetic Gal’s Suggestions for a Circus Themed Birthday Party! July 13, 2008

Circus themed party can be an extremely fun party for kids who belong to the more hyperactive type as well as those who are interested in circus arts, so why not plan a circus themed party for your kid whose birthday party is just round the corner.

Dressing up for the Occasion

Since it is a circus themed party, why not have everyone invited to dress up as different characters that one can find in a circus? Have everyone invited to dress up for the party and have your child dressed up as the ring master (since he/she is the birthday child)! This will definitely add to the atmosphere of the party. To make it fun, it would be nice to have free gifts of clown nose to all who arrives. This can double up as a doo gift too.

Decorations

For decorations, thinking along the line of circuses, it would be really cool if you have enough space to create a circus tent like tentage. It may not be exactly circus tent, but it could be something along the lines of round seating, or partial round seating with a center stage. Put in colourful balloons, pseudo-real posters of performers (make up some funny ones with your birthday kid’s photo, or even your own photos) all around the tentage for a real circus, carnival-like atmosphere!

Party Bags

For a circus themed party, consider having party bags with face painting kits, or small finger animal puppets. Hats that are juggler or clown-like are also hot favorites! Also, consider putting some light sticks in the bag for the kids to have some fun with some glow-in-the dark action at night too.

Games and Entertainment

For games, there could be a face painting competition (or you could have a real face painter at the party) and best dressed competition. You can have an Animal’s Charade (charade but only with animals you find in circuses), Monkey Hear Monkey Do (actually a tweaked version of Simon Says) and even the traditional Pin the Donkey’s Tail. You could rent a candy floss machine too for the day, and that would really add to the atmosphere. As for entertainment, you can always look for jugglers, clowns or even contortionists! However, do note that while clowns are a standard at circuses, some young kids are in fact, scared of clowns, so jugglers who can do magic (actually, just like yours truly :P ) would be a great option.

Whatever it is, just remember, the birthday party is a great way for the kid to have fun (and for you too) so the best thing is to enjoy the whole process and have fun planning the party!
